Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya served as the second Siamese capital for 417 years until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767. At its peak, it was one of the largest cities in the world with over a million inhabitants and was a major trading hub between China and India. The UNESCO-listed ruins of temples and palaces sit on an island formed by three rivers.
