Bandung sits in a volcanic basin about 700 metres up in West Java, and dates its founding as a city to 1810. Once nicknamed the "Paris of Java", it keeps a rich stock of colonial Art Deco buildings, among them Villa Isola and Gedung Merdeka, where Sukarno hosted the first Asian–African Conference in 1955. The Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia's oldest technical university (founded 1920), anchors the country's leading technology centre, and the city joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network as a City of Design in 2015. The Tangkuban Perahu crater lies just to the north.
