Built on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, Bodrum was home to the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The imposing Castle of St. Peter, built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 15th century from stones of the ruined Mausoleum, now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The town has been a haven for Turkish writers and artists since the 1940s.
