The oldest city in the Philippines, Cebu was where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, planting a cross and introducing Christianity to the islands. Magellan was killed in the nearby Battle of Mactan by chieftain Lapu-Lapu, now a national hero. The Basilica del Santo Nino houses the oldest Christian relic in the Philippines, a figure of the child Jesus.
