Daegu sits in a basin ringed by low mountains, Palgongsan to the north and Biseulsan to the south, about 80 km from the coast. It became the administrative capital of Gyeongsang Province in 1601, and its Yangnyeongsi herbal-medicine market, opened in 1658, once drew buyers from neighbouring countries. In the early 1960s its orchards held most of Korea's apple acreage, which gave it the nickname "Apple City", though Korean press reports say apple growing has since moved north as the region warmed. Textiles, metals and machinery long drove the economy. Since July 2023 Gunwi County has been part of the city, giving Daegu a northern area with a quite different climate.
