Founded in 1478 by the Spanish on Gran Canaria island, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus stopped here in 1492 to repair the Pinta before continuing to the Americas. The city's Vegueta quarter preserves its 15th-century origins, while Playa de Las Canteras offers a stunning 3km urban beach.
