Lençóis grew from a camp of diamond prospectors after stones were found in 1844-45, and its cobbled streets and 19th-century houses, under federal heritage protection since 1973, still mark that boom. It is the main entry point to Chapada Diamantina National Park, with tour agencies and guides based in the town for the trails and caves. The Lençóis river runs through the town itself, and the Serrano rock pools and small falls are about 1 km from the centre. It sits roughly 410 km inland from Salvador, about six hours by bus. The town lies at around 400 m at the foot of the Serra do Sincorá, with a distinct dry season in the middle of the year.
Nights sit around 20°C and afternoons around 31°C.
