Founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535, Lima was the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru and the most important city in South America for three centuries. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Plaza de Armas, colonial churches, and catacombs.
