Los Angeles now sprawls across roughly 1,300 square kilometres, stitching together Pacific beach towns like Venice and Santa Monica with inland valleys, hills and Downtown high-rises. On Wilshire Boulevard, the La Brea Tar Pits still seep asphalt that trapped Ice Age animals over 11,000-50,000 years ago, the only actively excavated Ice Age fossil site in an urban setting anywhere in the world.
