A volcanic archipelago 1,000km southwest of Lisbon, Madeira was discovered uninhabited by Portuguese explorers in 1419 and became the first outpost of European overseas expansion. Its levada irrigation channels, built from the 15th century onward, now form over 2,500km of spectacular walking paths through laurel forests — a UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem. Cristiano Ronaldo was born here in 1985.
