Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakech served as the capital of the Moroccan empire and gave its name to Morocco itself. The medina's labyrinthine souks, the Koutoubia Mosque, and the Jemaa el-Fna square — a UNESCO-recognized space of oral tradition — have drawn travelers for centuries. The city sits at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, whose peaks reach over 4,000m.
