North Macedonia's capital sprawls along the Vardar River, a city that has been continuously inhabited since at least 4000 BC. The Old Bazaar is the largest in the Balkans outside Istanbul. In the 2010s, the controversial 'Skopje 2014' project added hundreds of neoclassical statues and buildings, creating one of Europe's most surreal cityscapes. Despite the kitsch, it's one of the cheapest capitals in Europe with a growing café and nightlife scene.
