Built around the massive 4th-century Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian, Split's old town is literally the palace — its walls, cellars, and temples have been continuously inhabited and adapted for 1,700 years. The UNESCO-listed complex is one of the world's most complete surviving Roman palaces.
