Stockholm was founded in 1252 by the statesman Birger Jarl and spans fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, with roughly a third of the city given over to water and another third to parks. It is Sweden's political and financial capital, and produces more billion-dollar tech startups per capita than any city besides Silicon Valley — Spotify and Klarna both began here. December days shrink to about six hours of daylight; June holds close to eighteen. The 30,000-island archipelago just offshore is where residents spend their short, intense summers by boat.
