Stuttgart began around 950 AD as a stud farm, Stuotgarten ('stud garden'), for the Duke of Swabia's warhorses, becoming capital of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1805. It sits in the Stuttgarter Kessel, a natural basin whose slopes have carried vineyards since 1108 and still produce wine within the city limits. Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed early motor vehicles here, and Mercedes-Benz and Porsche keep their headquarters in the city today alongside supplier giant Bosch. Roughly one in three residents is foreign-born, in a metro area of 5.5 million.
