Tainan

Taiwan's oldest city was the island's capital for over 200 years under the Qing Dynasty. Tainan has more temples per square kilometer than anywhere in Taiwan — over 1,600 — including the 17th-century Koxinga Shrine. But it's the street food that draws devotees: beef soup at 5am, coffin bread, shrimp rolls, and milkfish dishes found nowhere else. The Dutch-built Fort Zeelandia (1624) marks the beginning of Taiwan's recorded history.
