Todos Santos grew around a freshwater spring on Baja California Sur's arid Pacific coast, where Jesuits founded a mission outpost in 1723 that became Misión Santa Rosa de las Palmas in 1733. Eight sugar mills ran here by the late 1800s; the spring dried up in 1950, the last mill closed in 1965, and only the spring's 1981 return and Highway 19's mid-1980s paving revived the town through farming and tourism. Named a Pueblo Mágico in 2006, it now runs on an artist colony and surf breaks at nearby Cerritos and Pescadero. Its Hotel California shares only a name with the Eagles song, not written about it; the band sued over the name in 2017 and settled in 2018, with the hotel keeping it.
