Founded as the Roman colony of Caesaraugusta around 14 BC, Zaragoza became Saraqusta, capital of a Moorish taifa kingdom, after the 8th-century conquest — the 11th-century Aljafería Palace survives from that era as one of Islamic Spain's finest palaces. Three of its Mudéjar-era monuments, including the Aljafería and the tower of La Seo cathedral, are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The city sits on the Ebro, Spain's largest river by volume, and is Spain's fourth-largest city with about 700,000 residents. A 1564 plague outbreak killed roughly a third of its population.
