Almaty served as Kazakhstan's capital until 1997, when the government moved to what is now Astana, but it remains the country's largest city and financial engine, generating roughly a fifth of national GDP. It sits at 700-900 metres in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau, part of the Tian Shan range, with the Shymbulak ski resort a short ride above the city. The name likely derives from the Kazakh word for apple, and botanists believe the wild species Malus sieversii, native to these hills, is the ancestor of every cultivated apple on Earth.
