Boise grew out of an 1863 gold-rush camp in the Boise Valley and takes its name from French-Canadian trappers, who called the tree-lined river 'la rivière boisée' — the wooded river — decades before any town existed. Downtown sits at about 830 metres, with the Boise Foothills rising directly north and a 25-mile paved Greenbelt following the river through the city. Long known as the City of Trees for a 19th-century planting campaign, Boise became one of the fastest-growing US metros as remote workers priced out of West Coast cities relocated here during the 2020s. Each June the sky fills with more than a hundred hot-air balloons for the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic.
