One of the world's greatest archaeological sites, Bagan's plain along the Irrawaddy River contains over 2,000 surviving Buddhist temples and pagodas built between the 9th and 13th centuries, when it was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom. At its peak, over 10,000 structures stood here. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is best experienced at sunrise from a hot air balloon floating above the ancient spires.
