Founded in 1542 on the ruins of the Maya city of T'ho, Merida is the cultural capital of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its grand Paseo de Montejo, lined with mansions built during the henequen boom of the 19th century, reflects a period of extraordinary wealth. The city sits 30km from Progreso port and is surrounded by thousands of unexplored cenotes and Maya archaeological sites.
