San Pedro became Belize's main tourist town after growing from an 1848 fishing settlement on Ambergris Caye, a 40km-long barrier island, settled by families fleeing the Caste War of Yucatan. Madonna's 1987 hit La Isla Bonita opens by naming the town, and officials credit the song with putting it on the map. The Belize Barrier Reef, the world's second-largest, runs just offshore, and the town runs two hyperbaric chambers for the divers who come for Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. There is no coworking space on the island; people work from guesthouse rooms, hotel terraces and the cafés along Front Street.
