Bratislava sits on the Danube where Austria, Hungary and Slovakia meet — the only national capital bordering two other countries. From 1536 to 1783, while Ottomans held Buda, it was the capital of Royal Hungary, and between 1563 and 1830 eleven monarchs were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral. It became Czechoslovakia's Slovak capital in 1919, then capital of independent Slovakia in 1993. Vienna is 55 km away, close enough that some residents live in one city and commute to the other by train in under an hour. The compact Old Town sits below Bratislava Castle on its hill; Volkswagen's plant here builds Audi, Porsche and Bentley SUVs.
