Cuenca
Ecuador
โColonial jewel โ UNESCO old town, rivers and parks, expat haven, eternal spring at 2,500mโ
A UNESCO World Heritage city in Ecuador's southern highlands, Cuenca was founded in 1557 on the ruins of the Inca city of Tomebamba, which was itself built on Canari indigenous foundations. The city's cobblestone streets, blue-domed cathedral, and flower markets along the Tomebamba River create a distinctly European atmosphere at 2,500m elevation. It is renowned for producing the finest Panama hats, which actually originate from Ecuador.
