The world's highest official capital at 2,850m, Quito sits in a narrow Andean valley flanked by volcanoes, including the active Cotopaxi. Its colonial old town was the first to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, preserving 16th-century churches, monasteries, and plazas built by the Spanish atop Inca foundations. The equator line passes just 26km north of the city.
