Kandy was the last independent capital of the Sinhalese kings, repelling Portuguese and Dutch forces for three centuries until the British finally annexed it in 1815. Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, enshrines what Buddhists believe is a tooth of the Buddha and anchors the UNESCO-listed old city beside its artificial lake, added in 1988 for its role as the last capital of a Lankan monarchy. Ringed by the Knuckles and Hanthana mountain ranges at roughly 500m elevation, Kandy runs noticeably cooler than Colombo, two hours down the hill by road. Much of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) was filmed on its streets and inside its temples.
