A stretch of quiet beach towns along the Andaman coast in Phang Nga province, Khao Lak is the gateway to the spectacular Similan Islands and Surin Islands. The area was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the preserved Police Boat 813 memorial stands as a haunting reminder. It has rebuilt as a relaxed, family-friendly alternative to Phuket.
