Kochi grew after Muziris, the ancient Malabar port that traded with Rome and Arabia, silted shut in a 1341 flood. The Portuguese built Fort Emmanuel here in 1503, the first European fort on Indian soil; the Dutch seized it in 1663 and lost it to the British in 1795, leaving colonial layers around Fort Kochi. This coordinate sits across the harbour in Ernakulam, Kerala's financial capital, now home to the Infopark tech corridor built partly because submarine cables land nearby. Fort Kochi's cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, introduced by 14th-century traders, are still hand-hauled daily, and nearby Mattancherry's 1568 Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth.
