The second-largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui was originally settled by Chinese fishermen about 1,500 years ago. It remained largely isolated until the first paved road was built in the 1970s and the airport opened in 1989. The island is home to the famous 12-meter-tall golden Big Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai, built in 1972.
