Osh sits at the head of the Fergana Valley on the old Silk Road; UNESCO dates the settlement at over 3,000 years old, among Central Asia's oldest. Sulaiman-Too, the outcrop at its centre, is Kyrgyzstan's only UNESCO World Heritage Site — possibly Ptolemy's "Stone Tower," marking the ancient route's midpoint between Europe and Asia. Its riverside bazaar traded on the same ground for roughly 2,000 years before relocating in 2025. In June 2010, ethnic riots killed at least 81 people and sent up to 100,000 Uzbeks fleeing across the nearby border, which still cuts off Osh's old hinterland. A digital-nomad status, in force nationwide since April 2025, applies here as in Bishkek.
