Tucked in a mountain valley in Mae Hong Son province, Pai was a sleepy farming village until backpackers discovered it in the 1980s. The town sits along the Pai River at 630m elevation, surrounded by hot springs, waterfalls, and limestone canyons. Its 762 curves on the road from Chiang Mai have become legendary among motorcycle travelers.
Pai barely changes season: around 25°C most of the year.
There is a clear wet season from May – September, peaking in August with around 258 mm. The dry months run from December – March.
Wind is rarely an issue; most months sit between calm and a light breeze. Air quality is worth watching: March averages an AQI of 84, while July clears to 16.
Days stretch to about 13.2 hours of light in June and shrink to 10.8 in December — something to weigh if you work to a fixed timezone.
For what you're after, the best months in Pai are February – April. Expect fast internet (174 Mbps) and a low cost of living (about €600 a month).
