Portland was founded in 1845 and got its name from a coin toss: Francis Pettygrove won the flip over Asa Lovejoy, who wanted to call it Boston. It sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, with the Cascades' Mount Hood visible from downtown bridges and the Pacific coast under two hours away. Nicknamed the Rose City for an annual flower festival dating to the early 1900s, Portland later built its identity on food carts, craft beer and the unofficial motto 'Keep Portland Weird.' Its Steel Bridge, opened in 1912, replaced the West Coast's first steel bridge, built on the same site in 1888.
