Founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Its Zona Colonial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the first cathedral, first university, and first hospital built in the New World. The Alcazar de Colon, residence of Diego Columbus (Christopher's son), overlooks the Ozama River where the Spanish fleet once anchored.
