Sayulita lies on the Pacific coast of Nayarit, in the BahĂa de Banderas municipality, and the 2020 census counted 3,390 residents. Its first workers came for the coconut palm ranches and their oil, and by the 1940s farming and fishing had taken over. The Las Varas–Puerto Vallarta highway opened in 1965, and surfers have come to the beach since the 1960s. Around 1920 Don Lauro González Guerra named it after his hometown of Sayula, a name tied to the Nahuatl tzaulan, 'place where flies abound'.
