Tampere was chartered by King Gustav III of Sweden on 1 October 1779, when it had fewer than 200 inhabitants and covered about 3.2 square kilometres. It grew around the Tammerkoski rapids, which connect lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi and powered its mills. Scottish-born James Finlayson founded a cotton mill there in 1820, and the industrial city became known as the "Manchester of Finland". The brick factory districts have since been converted to offices and culture, and the city, now around 263,000 people, is described as the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries.
