“Sleepy capital on the Mekong — French bakeries, temples, sunset riverfront”
One of the world's quietest capitals, Vientiane stretches along the Mekong River across from Thailand. Founded in the 9th century, it became the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom in 1563. The city was sacked and largely destroyed by the Siamese in 1827. Its most iconic monument, Pha That Luang, is a 45-meter gold-covered stupa believed to contain a relic of Buddha.
