The capital moved to Guatemala City, leaving Antigua's baroque colonial ruins frozen in time beneath three towering volcanoes — Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Fuego remains one of Central America's most active volcanoes, regularly sending ash clouds over the cobblestone streets.
