Founded in 1576 under viceroy Martín Enríquez de Almanza, León sits at 1,815m on the flat farmland of Guanajuato's Bajío, a colonial town grown into Mexico's fourth-largest municipality. Leather runs through everything here: the city produces an estimated 70% of Mexico's shoes, and generations of tannery workers earned the nickname 'panza verde' — green belly — for the dye stains of the trade. Emperor Maximilian's 1864 visit left a lighter mark than most royal tours: one of Mexico's earliest public hot-air balloon displays, staged by the Alemán brothers.
