Refounded in 1555 beside a Chichimeca village at 1,900m in Guanajuato's Bajío highlands, San Miguel el Grande was renamed in 1826 for independence hero Ignacio Allende, whose family house stands on the main square. The pink neo-Gothic facade that mason Zeferino Gutiérrez gave the Parroquia from 1880, reputedly from postcards, is the town's emblem. The Escuela de Bellas Artes (1938) and the Instituto Allende (1950) drew American GI Bill veterans after World War II, seeding a large American foreign community in a town of 72,000. UNESCO listed the historic centre and the Atotonilco sanctuary in 2008; Beat icon Neal Cassady collapsed beside the railway outside town in 1968 and died hours later.
