Otomi leader Conín and Spanish conquistador Hernán Pérez de Bocanegra founded the city on 25 July 1531; chroniclers claimed a solar eclipse during the founding battle sealed its outcome. The UNESCO-listed centre (1996) blends the conquerors' grid with the Otomi quarter's lanes, still watered by a 74-arch aqueduct built 1726–1738. Conspirator Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez plotted the 1810 independence uprising from her house here, and the city later served briefly as Mexico's provisional capital while the 1917 Constitution was drafted. Bombardier Aerospace and Samsung Electronics now anchor one of Mexico's fastest-growing manufacturing economies.
