Boquete is a highland coffee town of around 7,500 people at roughly 1,200m in Panama's Chiriquí province, on the eastern flank of Volcán Barú, the country's tallest point at 3,475m. Trade winds push Caribbean moisture over the continental divide and down into the valley as bajareque, a fine wind-driven mist that is neither rain nor fog and throws frequent rainbows over the coffee farms. Panama's Pensionado retiree program has built one of Central America's most established North American expat communities here, with more than 3,000 foreign residents. Geisha beans grown on the volcano's slopes set a world-record auction price of $1,029 a pound in 2019.
