Perched at 1,600m in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border, Sa Pa was established as a hill station by the French in 1922. The surrounding rice terraces, carved into steep mountainsides by Hmong and Dao ethnic minorities over centuries, are among the most spectacular agricultural landscapes in Asia. Fansipan, Indochina's highest peak at 3,143m, rises nearby.

There is a clear wet season from March – November, peaking in July with around 461 mm. The driest month is December, with about 66 mm.
Wind is rarely an issue; most months sit between calm and a light breeze. Air quality is worth watching: April averages an AQI of 95, while June clears to 53.
Days stretch to about 13.4 hours of light in June and shrink to 10.6 in December — something to weigh if you work to a fixed timezone.
